ભાષાંતર – એ તેમનો દિવસ હતો જ નહિ. 1972ની યૂનિક ઑલિમ્પિક્સમાં બાસ્કેટબૉલની અંતિમ સ્પર્ધા રશિયા અને અમેરિકા વચ્ચે રમાઈ રહી હતી. રશિયનો 49–48થી જીતી રહ્યા હતા. જ્યારે અમેરિકન ખેલાડી કોલિન્સને બે ‘ફ્રી થો’ મળ્યા ત્યારે ફક્ત 6 સેકન્ડ બાકી હતી. સેકન્ડોમાં બાજી પલટાઈ ગઈ અને સ્કોર 50–49 થઈ ગયો. અમેરિકનો અણધારી જીત થતાં ખુશીમાં કૂદવા લાગ્યા. પછી થોડી જ વારમાં બબ્બેરિયન નિર્ણાયકે ધ્યાન દોર્યું કે રમત સમાપ્ત થવામાં એક સેકન્ડ બાકી હતી.
અમેરિકનો એક સેકન્ડ વધારે રમ્યા અને ફરી ઉત્સવ મનાવવા લાગ્યા. પછી એક બ્રિટિશ નિર્ણાયક આવ્યા અને તેમણે જાહેર ક્ય કે હજી પણ ત્રણ સેકન્ડ બાકી હતી. અમેરિકન ખેલાડીઓને મેદાન પર ત્રીજી વાર જવા સિવાય કોઈ આરો નહોતો. અને એ ત્રણ સેકન્ડમાં રશિયન ખેલાડી ઍલેકઝેન્ડર બિલોએ સ્કોર 51-50 કરી નાખ્યો અને તેના રાષ્ટ્ર માટે સુવર્ણચંદ્રક જીતી લીધો.
રમતમાં ભાગ લીધા વગર રજતચંદ્રક જીતવો એ કોઈના માટે શક્ય છે? 1962માં જકાર્તા મુકામે “એશિયન ગેઇમ્સ’ રમાવાની હતી. તેમાં ભારતીય હૉકીની ટીમમાં આર. એ. ક્રીસ્ટીની પસંદગી થઈ હતી. પાછળથી વિદેશી હૂંડિયામણ ન મળવાના કારણે ક્રીસ્ટી તેનું નામ ટીમમાં પાકું હોવા છતાં ટીમની સાથે જઈ શક્યો નહિ. પણ બન્યું એવું કે હૉકીની ટીમ ક્રીસ્ટી વિના રમી અને રજતચંદ્રક જીતી ગઈ. ક્રીસ્ટી, કે જેનું નામ હજી સુધી યાદીમાં હતું, તેને ઘેર બેઠાં ચંદ્રક મળ્યો.
મલેશિયાનો ગેન કેંગ વૃન, તે રમતો હતો ત્યારે મૃત્યુ પામ્યો. 33 વર્ષની ઉંમરનો ઘૂન રમત દરમિયાન લપસ્યો અને જમીન પર પડી ગયો. તેનું ચોકઠું તેની જગ્યાએથી સરકીને તેની શ્વાસનળીમાં ફસાઈ ગયું. તેને દવાખાને લઈ જવાતો હતો તે સમયે ગૂંગળામણને કારણે તે મૃત્યુ પામ્યો હતો.

હેમ્પશાયરના એક ક્રિકેટ ખેલાડીને યૉર્કશાયર સામેની મૅચમાં હાથે ઈજા થઈ. તેણે અકસ્માત વીમાની અરજીનું ફૉર્મ ભર્યું. સાક્ષીઓ તરીકે તેણે 2891 પ્રેક્ષકો, 21 ખેલાડીઓ, બે અનામત (ખેલાડીઓ), બે નિર્ણાયકો (umpires), બે મેદાન-કામદારો, ત્રણ દરવાન અને ઝાડ પરના એક નિશાળિયાને રાખ્યા. વિમાકંપની “ક્લીન બોલ્ડ’ થઈ ગઈ. તેમણે પૈસા ચૂકવી દીધા!
બર્લિન મુકામે 1936 ની ઑલિમ્પિક્સમાં દરેકની ધારણા હતી કે અગાઉના વર્ષની પોલૅન્ડની વિજેતા સ્ટેલા વૉલ્સ 100 મીટરની દોડ-હરીફાઈનો સુવર્ણચંદ્રક જાળવી રાખશે. પણ તેમને અત્યંત નિરાશ કરીને છેલ્લી ઘડીએ અમેરિકાની હેલન સ્ટીફન્સ દોડ જીતી ગઈ. ગુસ્સે ભરાયેલા પોલૅન્ડવાસીઓએ હેલન પર કપટી હોવાનો આક્ષેપ કર્યો. તેમણે આક્ષેપ કર્યો કે તે, સ્ત્રીના છૂપા વેશમાં પુરુષ હતો. આ વિવાદનો ઉકેલ લાવવા માટે ન્યાયાધીશોએ, મહિલા અધિકારીઓ પાસે તેની શારીરિક તપાસ કરાવવી એવો નિર્ણય લીધો. આ કસોટીમાં સફળ થયા પછી જ તેને વિજેતા જાહેર કરવામાં આવી.
1936 માં ભારત ઇંગ્લેન્ડ સામે ક્રિકેટ મૅચ રમી રહ્યું હતું. ઇંગ્લેન્ડની ટીમ ફિલ્ડિંગ કરતી હતી. બૉલર હતો આલ્ફ ગોવર. તેના ત્રીજા દડે ગોવર દોડતો આવ્યો અને દડો બૅટ્સમૅન તરફ ફેંકવાને બદલે તે દોડતો જ રહ્યો. તેણે અમ્પાયર્સ, પીચ અને પ્રેક્ષકોને વટાવી દીધા અને દડાને હજી હાથમાં બરાબર પકડી રાખીને સીધો ઍવિલિયનમાં જતો રહ્યો. પાછળથી જાણવા મળ્યું હતું કે બિચારા બૉલરને એકાએક શૌચાલય જવાની એટલી બધી તીવ્ર ઇચ્છા થઈ આવી કે તેને બીજા કોઈને દડો આપી દેવાનો સમય પણ ન મળ્યો.
