Direct and Indirect Proportions Class 8 GSEB Notes
→ Ratio: Ratio is a comparison of two quantities of similar kind with the help of division.
→ Proportion: When two ratios are equal, they are said to be in proportion. If \(\frac{a}{b}=\frac{c}{d}\) – then a, b, c, and d are in proportion.
- Direct proportion
- Indirect proportion
→ Direct Proportion: Two quantities related in such a manner that an increase in one results in a corresponding increase in other or a decrease in one results in corresponding decrease in the other, i.e., both quantities increase and decrease proportionately.
e.g. The more books you buy, the more you pay or less you buy, the less you pay.
→ Inverse Proportion: Two quantities related in such a manner that an increase in one results in a corresponding decrease in the other or a decrease in one results in a corresponding increase in the other, i.e., when one increases, the other decreases proportionately and vice versa.
e.g. The more number of labourers do a certain work takes less time and less number of labourers take more time to do the same work.
